असग़र वजाहत की कहानी - लिंचिंग

बूढ़ी औरत को जब यह बताया गया कि उसके पोते सलीम की 'लिंचिंग' हो गई है तो उसकी समझ में कुछ न आया। उसके काले, झुर्रियों पड़े चेहरे और धुंधली मटमैली आंखों में कोई भाव न आया। उसने फटी चादर से अपना सिर ढक लिया। उसके लिए 'लिंचिंग' शब्द नया था। पर उसे यह अंदाजा हो गया था कि यह अंग्रेजी का शब्द है। इससे पहले भी उसने अंग्रेजी के कुछ शब्द सुने थे जिन्हें वह जानती थी। उसने अंग्रेजी का पहला शब्द 'पास' सुना था जब सलीम पहली क्लास में 'पास' हुआ था। वह जानती थी के 'पास' का क्या मतलब होता है। दूसरा शब्द उसने 'जॉब' सुना था। वह समझ गई थी कि 'जॉब' का मतलब नौकरी लग जाना है। तीसरा शब्द उसने 'सैलरी' सुना था। वह जानती थी 'सैलरी' का क्या मतलब होता है। यह शब्द सुनते ही उसकी नाक में तवे पर सिकती रोटी की सुगंध आ जाया करती थी। उसे अंदाज़ा था कि अंग्रेजी के शब्द अच्छे होते हैं और उसके पोते के बारे में यह कोई अच्छी खबर है।

बुढ़िया इत्मीनान भरे स्वर में बोली- अल्लाह उनका भला करें..

लड़के हैरत से उसे देखने लगे। सोचने लगे बुढ़िया को 'लिंचिंग' का मतलब बताया जाए या नहीं। उनके अंदर इतनी हिम्मत नहीं थी की बुढ़िया को बताएं कि 'लिंचिंग' क्या होती है । 

बुढ़िया ने सोचा कि इतनी अच्छी खबर देने वाले लड़कों को दुआ तो ज़रूर देनी चाहिए ।

वह बोली- बच्चों, अल्लाह करे तुम सबकी 'लिंचिंग' हो जाए.... ठहर जाओ मैं मुंह मीठा कराती हूं।

When the old woman was told that her grandson, Salim, had been lynched, she couldn’t quite understand it. There was no expression on her dark, wizened face or in her old, misty eyes. She covered her head with a tattered cloth. The word ‘Lynching’ was new for her. But she could guess that it was an English word. She had heard some English words earlier, too, and she knew what they meant. The first English word she had heard was ‘Pass’ when Salim had passed the first class. She knew what the word ‘Pass’ meant. The second word she had heard was ‘Job’. She understood that the word ‘Job’ meant getting employed. The third word she heard was ‘Salary’. She knew what that meant, too. The moment she would hear the word ‘Salary’, the scent of a roti being freshly cooked on a griddle wafted into her nostrils. She could guess that English words were good and the news about her grandson must be a good one.

The old woman spoke in a contended tone, ‘May Allah Bless them!’

The boys looked at her in disbelief. They were wondering whether they should tell her the meaning of ‘Lynching’, or not.

They did not have the strength to tell the old woman exactly what ‘Lynching’ was.

The old woman thought that she ought to bless the boys who had brought such good news to her.

She said, ‘My children, May Allah grant Lynching for all of you...Wait, I will get something sweet for you.’
